Doses of the swine flu drug Tamiflu are selling for £120 on the internet despite being free on the NHS.

The antiviral medication is being snapped up in "unprecedented" amounts as concern over the outbreak increases.

One online distributor of Tamiflu said demand is being fuelled by people worried that official clinics won't get Tamiflu to them in time. The boom in internet sales of Tamiflu comes as a new official way of distributing antivirals was said to be causing confusion and rule-breaking.

Patients at London's first NHS Tamiflu distribution centre admitted ignoring government advice to get their hands on the medication.

By the end of the week every area in the country must set up a Tamiflu distribution centre, where people can pick up Tamiflu for friends with swine flu.

But at the first HNS Tamiflu distribution centre, which has opened in Tower Hamlets - the worst affected area - confusion is mounting over who is allowed access to it. Patients must phone their doctors before arriving at the specialist clinic, near Mile End Hospital. But many are unaware of the advice.

A website and phone line, manned by non-medical staff, will be set up to take pressure off GPs by the end of the week. But patients using the HNS Tower Hamlets Tamiflu centre said they are bypassing doctors. Local Ash Inam, 27, said: "You call GPs and they say come after four days. So I went to a walk-in centre, and they said go to the distribution centre."

A spokesman for the Department of Health said: "The Government has a stockpile of swine flu antivirals sufficient to treat all those who would become ill, so private stockpiling is unnecessary."

Chief medical officer Liam Donaldson said today that pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems could be advised to stay away from crowds for "a few weeks" should the swine flu reach "big numbers" in the autumn.

It comes as the World Health Organisation today said the H1N1 virus has killed more than 700 worldwide since April, and that affected countries should consider closing schools to slow swine flu spread.

Meanwhile, London schoolboy Matthew Barnet, 14, was still in swine flu quarantine at a Beijing hospital today. Two fellow pupils from Central Foundation Boys' School in Islington have been released from the hospital, while the rest of their class, at the nearby Yanxiang Hotel with another group of children, were told they were free to continue their visit to China.

Drug maker Roche Holding AG said it will cut the price of its viral drug Tamilflu for developing economies by half and allow them to spread payments over several years. Under the program, Roche will produce and store Tamiflu pandemic stockpiles for specified developing countries, charging between £5 and £6 (between $7 and $8.40) for a pack of ten Tamiflu.
